About Lake Tahoe

We are excited to welcome you to Open Source Leadership Summit 2017 in Lake Tahoe, California!

Lake Tahoe is a pristine jewel of nature - it is the second deepest lake in the United States and has over 72 miles of shoreline. On average, you can see 70 feet down into Lake Tahoe's remarkably clean waters. Take in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains and enjoy Lake Tahoe!

Things to Do and See

Skiing and Snowboarding
With an on-site chairlift and rental facility at the Resort at Squaw Creek, participating in winter sports has never been easier! Squaw Valley offers an unparalleled variety of terrain since joining forces with Alpine Meadows. One lift ticket provides skiers and riders access to more than 42 chairlifts, 270+ trails, and more than 6,000 acres of skiable terrain. Squaw Valley and Alpine together offers the most terrain in a single day, on a single pass, of all the Tahoe Resorts. To purchase lift tickets, visit the on-site ticket office located next to Squaw Creek Sports.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoe through Squaw Valley's snowy meadow and designated trail system at the Resort at Squaw Creek. The Nordic Center, at the trailhead of the Cross Country Ski & Snowshoe trails, rents snowshoes for adults and kids. All trails originate at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Aerial Tram
The Aerial Tram is one of Squaw Valley's most popular year-round attractions. Take a scenic ride that climbs 2,000 vertical feet to High Camp (el. 8,200'). Once you reach the top, enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe.  For rates and tickets, please visit their website.

Visit the Olympic Museum
Take a trip back in time and learn about the 1960 Winter Olympics that took place at Squaw Valley. The recently renovated Olympic Museum, located at High Camp, showcases unique memorabilia, news articles, and video presentations. Admission is free with your Aerial Tram ride.

Fun Facts about Lake Tahoe

The water in Lake Tahoe is 99.994% pure, making it one of the purest lakes in the world. For comparison, commercially distilled water is 99.998% pure!

A depth of 1,645 ft. in Crystal Bay makes Tahoe the second deepest lake in the USA, third deepest in North America and 11th deepest in the world.

If the Sears Tower was dropped into Lake Tahoe at its deepest point, the top would still be submerged by 195 ft. of water!

Only 53,000 people live in Lake Tahoe year round, but about three million people visit Lake Tahoe each year. This is comparable with the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks.

Ever been in two states at the same time? The California/Nevada state line carves a line thorugh Crystal Bay and you can swim or paddle from one state to the other in the summer time.
 

High Altitude Destinations

Lake Tahoe's mountain peaks vary from 9,000 to 11,000 feet. It's important to remember a few key details about visiting high altitude destinations:

• Give yourself some time to acclimate - Take it easy the first 24-48 hours of your trip and plan quieter activities before going all out with higher-intensity endeavors.
• Drink more water than you normally do - and try to limit intake of things like caffeine and alcohol while you are acclimating.
• Eat foods that promote oxygen use - like complex carbohydrates (whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes).
• Know the signs of altitude sickness - and they are not a sign of weakness! Let someone know if you start having headaches, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, and/or intense fatigue.
