About Berlin

We are excited to welcome you to Embedded Linux Conference Europe 2016 in Berlin, Germany!

Did you know that about 127 tons of sausage are consumed every day in Berlin? That should be more than enough reason to visit. Just in case it's not, read on for some fun facts.

Berlin Fun Facts

Berliners (the citizens of Berlin, not jelly doughnuts) have found the recipe for a happy life. Take a city with a rich history (it's one of the oldest cities in Europe), add a dash of innovative art and architecture, a myriad of bridges (more than Venice!), an island of world class museums, a plate full of award winning food (Berlin has more doner kebab shops than Istanbul) and round it out with Spati. Spati, my friends, is an integral part of Berlin's cultural fabric. Spatis are found all over town and are the jolly marriage of a convenience store and a speciality; a toy shop, fresh brewed coffee, a brew pub, bakery, etc. You can do a Spati pub crawl, buy a tasty breakfast or find some Berlin merchandise to take home for gifts. Whatever you choose to do, Spati is genius!

Things to Do and See

Walk along the East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery is a 1.3 km section of the Berlin Wall painted with 101 images by artists from 21 countries - making it the longest open-air gallery in the world!

See the city from the Berliner Fernsehturm
Located in the city centre, the Berliner Fernsehturm (Berlin TV Tower) is 368 meters high, making it one of the largest constructions in Europe. The panoramic viewing floor at 27 metres offers fantastic 360 degree views of the city. The Berlin TV Tower attracts more than 1.2 million visitors each year!

Spend a day museum hopping on Museum Island
There are 180 museums in the city, attracting around 15 million visitors each year! Berlin is home to the world's largest universal museum - Museumsinsel (Museum Island) - which contains five renowned museums. For a full list of museums in Berlin, click here.

Visit BOTH of Berlin's Zoos
That's right - Berlin has not one, but two top ranking zoos. West Berlin's Zoologischer Garten is one of the largest zoos in the world, with over 19,000 animals from nearly 1,500 different species. On the East side, Tierpark (Animal Park) is known for Knut the Polar Bear, a past local celebrity that warmed the hearts of Germans so much so that there were songs and movies made based on him!

Walk around the Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century neoclassical triumphal arch and is one of the best known landmarks in Germany. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia in 1788 as a sign of peace. Having suffered considerable damage in World War II, the Brandenburg Gate with fully restored to all of its glory in 2000.
